When you make a donation to a charity have you often wondered just where does that $1 that I have go to? How does it actually affect anyone right here in Fleming County. There are some really good charities out there. Fleming County can be proud to say we are home to one of those GREAT charities.
About 7 or 8 years ago a group of about 8 friends got together and decided to try and make a little bit of a difference in Fleming County. One of the very first meetings was held at the Flemingsburg Pizza Hut. The group were all friends but somehow hadn’t really thought about doing something like creating a non profit charity. They all had been touched by cancer in some way. Having lost a father, mother, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, neighbor or friend. The group just wanted to be able to help those in the community that they knew needed help and not just send off a bunch of money out of the community.
This group started under much turmoil. Suffice it to say that the group wasn’t welcomed by every organization with open arms. But the tougher the journey got for them, the more they dug their heels in to fight for the cause.
Through the years this organization has seen many changes. Through all the changes the organization has always remained true to its founding purpose: To make a difference in the life of cancer patients. Through all the years and all the service this group remains even still today a group of VOLUNTEERS. No one in the organization receives any compensation. Let me give you a few figures that may really make you open your eyes.
in 2007 this group donated over $33,000 to other local charities in the community. This might be local running groups, little league, school organizations, gymnastics teams, etc. In 2007 this organization donated over $120,000 back to local area cancer patients. This was through gas and grocery cards, payment of medical bills, transportation to doctor appointments, etc.
As great as that sounds this group has already topped itself through October in 2008. So far this year this group has donated over $30,000 to local charities and already donated back into local communities over $134,000 to local cancer patients.
Those members include: Phyllis Ritchie, Karen Hamm, Tammy Newsom, Gordon Peratt, Karen Donovan, Bettye Boone, Wayne Sartin, Janice Hiles, Doug Stone, Jennifer Shively, Howard Stone, Butch Thurman, Mary Peratt, Mark Dehart, Ida Hinton, Monica Burns, Lindsey Moran, Lawrence Steinbruggee, Melody Wallingford, Monica Wallingford, Sheila Marshall, Brian Leedy, Janet Jackson, Terrence Hill, Brenda Rains and Karla Sutton.
This group has won our organization of the year before and they are so deserving of winning it this year also. I am proud to announce the 2008 Community Service of the Year - Cancer Care Club.
